Life Isn't Fair

“It’s not fair!” is our common lament when we are hurting.

As we read in the Scriptures, salvation is not about fairness. It is about grace—getting what we do not merit or deserve.

Jesus didn't deserve to die on the cross, but He did anyway. He went through untold suffering so He could demonstrate the boundless love of God.

Everything that we have—our life—is by grace.

Jesus' parable of the laborers in the vineyard illustrates this. The laborers who had worked all day were paid the same daily rate as those who had worked for only a few hours. Naturally, the laborers who had worked longer complained and questioned the master of the vineyard, “It isn't fair!”

The master replied in Matthew 20:15, “Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?”

Grace often seems unfair.

The list of unfairness is endless: when we don't get recognized for our efforts; when someone gets the credit for something we have done; when an innocent man is sent to rot in jail and the guilty one remains scot-free; when the corrupt gets all the fame and fortune; when those who cheated passed the exam that others failed for being honest; and many more.

In these instances, we can do one of two things: 1) Accept God's offer to celebrate His grace;
or 2) Remain defiant, looking for fairness instead of participating in God's grace.

May we not begrudge Jesus of His generous grace.

Lord, make me accept the fact that life on earth is not fair.
Help me to accept Your offer to celebrate grace.
