DAY 23 CHRISTMAS GOOD NEWS: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE UNSELFISH
Some people would say that humans are naturally selfish, bolstered by the theory of natural selection. But some psychological research have shown the opposite. They say we are hardwired to be innately cooperative. It’s just that society has taught us to look out for our self-interests first rather than the so-called common good.
Whichever theory you believe, you know and understand that you can be truly selfish if you want to. And there are days when we give in to this desire to put ourselves first at the expense of everyone else. We have to learn, unlearn, or re-learn things in order to be selfless (the healthy kind). We should listen more to people, walk in their shoes if we don’t understand them, realize that everyone is going through something, check your privilege every once in a while, and consciously practice empathy.
It is of course important to learn to love and take care of yourself (and let me emphasize, #selfcareisnotselfish) But let us not forget the second part of the greatest commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself”.
